Our Mission


West Michigan New Horizons Music Ensembles (WMNHME is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1999 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Our mission is to make music, meet new people, and to have fun! We provide challenging but rewarding opportunities to share talents with others and to promote the lifelong pursuit of musical expression. WMNHME welcomes adult musicians of all skill levels, offering daytime rehearsals and performances from Labor Day through Memorial Day.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • No. Auditions are not required for any of our ensembles. However, some of our ensembles require ensemble director approval to join. This is done to ensure proper instrumentation for each ensemble. The New Horizons Symphonic Band is open to musicians of all playing levels.

  • Yes, members must provide their own instruments. Music stands are provided for rehearsals and seasonal concerts, but you will need your own stand for many outreach performances as well as home practice. If you would like to rent an instrument or purchase a stand, please contact our endorsed local providers:  Meyer Music or West Michigan Band Instruments.

  • All ensembles rehearse  St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, 3215  4 Mile Rd. at East Beltline, Grand Rapids, MI. Check rehearsal dates and times by clicking on Ensembles.

  • All music is provided by and is the property of WMNHME and is distributed to members for use during each semester. Members must, however, purchase ensemble-specific shirts for concerts/performances, ranging from $25 to $60.

  • Our Music Director, Paul Schroeder, conducts the New Horizons Symphonic Band and is a guide and mentor for the many music programs at WMNHME. The Ransom Street Big Band is directed by Ken Huisman, the Deutschlanders German Band is directed by Roger Bleiler, and the Bellissimo Handbell Ensemble is directed by Della Landheer.   • Yes. We offer both full season (two semesters) and single semester memberships.

  • We generally present two public concerts each year—a Christmas/Holiday concert and a Spring concert. We also offer several outreach performances at retirement and assisted living communities, veterans’ homes, public schools and universities. Participation in outreach performances is expected but optional.

  • To begin your music-making journey, visit Join the Band! You will have the option to become a member or try us out (no charge) and sit in on a rehearsal or two.

Paul Schroeder, Music Director

Paul conducts the New Horizons Symphonic Band and is a guide and mentor for all of the music programs at WMNHME. Paul is a retired band director, having most recently taught at Grand Rapids City High School. Spanning a 45-year career, he served as a K-12 music educator in three different states, a collegiate clinician, and is currently a flutist for the Grand Rapids Symphonic Band. Paul brings a lifetime of musical excellence to the podium, and firmly believes that the journey of music-making is a lifelong gift, transforming lives by rekindling joy, building community, and energizing and harmonizing the human spirit.

Board of Directors


The WMNHME Board of Directors is a volunteer board, and the governing body whose primary duty is to provide music-making opportunities for adults of all ages. As part of an active organization, many committees are needed for communications, marketing, grant writing and finances. The Music Director and Board President work together to nominate board member candidates, and they are elected for three-year terms by current board members. Three seats open annually in the spring. Interested Members who are interested in serving may contact any board member at any time—we’d love to have you!
